The Art of Shampooing
Shampooing is something that we do all the time and sometimes we take it for granted.
You may think it is a simple process of wetting your hair, slathering on some yummy cleansing ingredients and rinsing off but ... in reality, it is an art form.
Why is Shampooing Considered an Art Form
Shampoos are made to clean your scalp and hair (and for some of us, we like this cleaning to be gentle).
You may think you know how to shampoo but you really dont.
Here are some terminologies you may not be totally familiar with.
- Pre Poo
- Double Shampoo
- Light Touch Shampoo
- Lifted Roots Shampoo
Pre Poo - what is it and when do I need to do it ?

This is the more intensive way to clean your hair and is usuallu recommended if you have been using several stylers that use synthetic plastic or polymers.
To know when it should be done, you will start to notice a build up of products on your hair. In addition, your hair starts looking a little bit greasy or lack lustre and dull.
This is usually the time that you need to Pre Poo.
Sounds like a thing you may do before using the toilet right ?
In this case, it a process that you do before you start your shampoo, sans toilet and toilet jokes.
How to Pre Poo
- Apply some shampoo on dry hair, making sure it touches the scalp
- Gently use a brush to really spread it around so that it breaks up any grease, oils, synthetic polymers etc.
- Once this is done, step into the shower and rinse off.
- Follow with an good conditioner
- Finally enjoy your clean scalp and hair.
- I generally find that this is the best time to introduce stylers because you are starting from a fresh base.
Double Shampoo - what is it and when do I need to do it ?

This is when your hair is similar to the Pre Poo but not quite as bad.
It is also when you have been using silicones in your hair care regime. This process helps remove the silicones and all other residue that are clinging to your hair.
How to Double Shampoo
- Apply some shampoo on soaking wet hair,
- Gently use a brush to really spread it around so that it breaks up any grease, oils, synthetic polymers etc.
- Wash it out and see if your hair lathers.
- If it does not lather, repeat the process again until you notice the lather.
- Once it lathers, rinse off and follow with a good conditioner.
Light touch shampoo
This is the regular everyday shampoo method that you are probably really familiar with, and it wont be make any sense to further expand on this technique.
Lifted Roots technique
You already know this technique from CurlyEllie and here is a link to learn more.
It is probably one of my favourite techniques to create volumes, lift the hair up from the roots and see noticeable differences in your final styling results.
